Alaa Elwany is an ASME Foundation Swanson Advanced Manufacturing Fellow at the NIST Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO). Alaa received a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Production and Industrial Engineering, respectively, from Alexandria University, Egypt. 

Prior to joining AMNPO, Alaa worked at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Texas A&M University, where he is currently an Associate Professor and Eugene Webb Faculty Fellow on academic leave. Earlier in his career he also served as researcher at General Motors R&D Manufacturing Systems Research Laboratory and faculty member at Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands). 

During his service at Texas A&M University, he conducted research in modeling, analysis, and control of advanced manufacturing processes with focus on metal additive manufacturing. He led several federally and industrially funded research projects, and conducted workforce education and development activities at the state of Texas and nationally. He is the recipient of young investigator awards from NSF, ASME, SME, ASEE, and Texas A&M University.   

At AMNPO, Alaa serves as Assistant Director for Technology. He plans, designs, and develops formal documents for announcements and solicitations for Manufacturing USA. He is also responsible for outreach to non-federal stakeholders to ensure effective whole-of-government interface communications for advanced manufacturing.
