Background

Funding for this project was provided through the ARM Institute by the Air Force as a Directed Project Call. Directed ARM Institute Project Calls enable the Department of Defense/War to leverage program management expertise through the ARM Institute and the technical expertise of the ARM Member Consortium to rapidly catalyze solutions to Department of Defense/War challenges.

Problem Statement

This project extended the capabilities of a Mobile Multi-Use Robot (MMUR) that was previously deployed at Warner Robins. The MMUR system took on the ergonomically unfriendly task of removing fasteners (defastening), but required a substantial amount of oversight to ensure the robotics system does not damage the workpiece. This process was made even more difficult due to workforce shortages.

This Project Team created a physical AI solution to identify and classify fasteners, enable improved drilling operations, and increase speed.
