The United States is a world leader in manufacturing innovation. Manufacturing USA’s network of institutes exists to ensure that these innovations are used to successfully and profitably produce products here in America.
Building Capabilities to Make it Here
Manufacturing USA’s network of institutes bring industry, academia, and government together to accelerate the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies.
The network helps companies scale technology from invention to U.S. manufacturing readiness, with:
- A neutral, precompetitive R&D environment for collaborating on shared challenges
- Access to facilities, equipment, and expertise to test new technologies before committing to capital investments
- A national network of potential partners, including major manufacturers, universities, and technology experts
- Workforce tools and training in skills specific to advanced manufacturing jobs
Making America Stronger, Safer, and More Prosperous
By helping turn innovation into commercial impact, the Manufacturing USA network is helping make America:
- Stronger by securing U.S. leadership in critical and emerging technologies;
- Safer by strengthening the domestic supply chain and national security; and
- More prosperous by driving global economic competitiveness and reshoring manufacturing jobs.
Invented Here. Made Here. in Action
Below are just a few examples from over 875 recently completed applied R&D projects enabled by the institutes’ unique large-scale collaboration model, demonstrating how Manufacturing USA institutes position companies to scale up innovation and make products here at home.
- ARM Institute helped Keystone Designs—a site furnishings manufacturer in Sandusky, Ohio—integrate robotics into its operations and continue manufacturing its products cost-effectively in America.
- America Makes partnered with Ursa Major Technologies to advance metal additive manufacturing for rocket engine components, supporting more efficient and reliable domestic space vehicle production.
- IACMI brought together a team of researchers —including those from Volkswagen and IDI Composites International—to develop a compression-molded composite liftgate that can be produced quickly at high volumes at VW’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant, reducing costs by 9% compared with the steel baseline.
- NIIMBL brought together BioPhorum and a diverse team of leading biopharmaceutical industry experts to develop a buffer stock blending system that reduces manufacturing time for 2,000 liters of buffer solution from eight hours to less than an hour, accelerating time to market for biopharmaceutical products industry-wide.
