Advancing America’s Global Leadership in Science and Technology

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) today released “Advancing America’s Global Leadership in Science and Technology, Trump Administration Highlights: 2017-2020.” The document is a selection of significant investments, accomplishments, policies, and other actions undertaken by President Trump to advance science and technology.  It includes highlights of the Manufacturing USA network's work on, among other things, Advanced Manufacturing Skills in the Workforce (page 11) and Supporting the Fight Against COVID-19 with Advanced Manufacturing (page 18).

“President Trump has solidified America’s standing as the most scientifically and technologically advanced nation the world has ever known. The highlights in this report represent just a fraction of the achievements made by the Trump Administration on behalf of the American people. We have achieved a proud record of results, and under President Trump’s leadership, science and technology will continue to inspire us, unite us, and guide us to ever greater progress,” said Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier, White House OSTP Director.

“The Trump Administration has taken historic action to ensure American leadership in emerging technologies. We’ve announced unprecedented investments in artificial intelligence and quantum information science, launched new workforce initiatives and public-private collaborations, and established first-of-their-kind international alliances to develop critical technologies with our allies. Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the next great innovations will be made here in America for the benefit of the American people,” said Michael Kratsios, U.S. Chief Technology Officer.

Highlights include:

ENDING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Administration has taken decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academia, industry, and government to understand, treat, and defeat the disease.

STRENGTHENING AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN INDUSTRIES OF THE FUTURE: In President Trump’s first term, the Administration took historic action to strengthen our leadership in AI, quantum information science, advanced communications, advanced manufacturing, and biotechnology through unprecedented research investment, eliminating regulations that stifle innovation, building America’s 21st Century workforce, and engaging with likeminded international allies to advance science and technology.

UNDERSTANDING OUR PLANET: Under President Trump’s leadership, the Federal Government has taken action to understand and protect our environment to ensure that the American people will have clean air, clean water, and a resilient environment for generations to come.

PROTECTING OUR RESEARCH ENTERPRISE: To maximize our Nation’s innovation capacity, the Trump Administration launched the Joint Committee on the Research Environment (JCORE) in 2019. JCORE is bringing together government, academia, and many others to address administrative burdens on federally-funded research; improve rigor and integrity in research; create safe, inclusive, and equitable research settings; and protect our research assets while ensuring the research enterprise remains open and collaborative.

RETURNING TO SPACE EXPLORATION: Since reviving the National Space Council, President Trump established a whole-of-government effort to lead again in human space exploration, safeguard the space environment, promote national security, and streamline regulations to foster commercial space activities.
