Creating Factories of the Future

October 18, 2024
Institutes are pioneering innovations that will redefine manufacturing facilities in remarkable ways. Factories of the future will harness hydrogen and other green energy sources, utilize 3D printing for customized production, and incorporate advanced composite materials that are both lighter and stronger. These facilities will function as self-sustaining ecosystems, efficiently managing water, power, materials, and waste. Additionally, many will evolve into micro-factories, strategically located closer to raw materials or end users, a trend known as distributed manufacturing. These

Jennie Becker

… of Experiential Learning at MAGNET in Cleveland, Ohio, Jennie Becker is on a mission to reshape how kids and young adults see the future of work, starting with manufacturing. Her efforts are focused on one powerful goal: building a pipeline of future manufacturing talent, beginning as … deployable additive manufacturing capabilities. This will provide a transformational impact on the regional economy. At the heart of Jennie’s work is the field trip program she launched in early 2023. Every day, up to 25 students from different schools walk through MAGNET’s doors and … in manufacturing and electric vehicles, Jennie connects with students on a level that’s personal, energetic, and transformative. Jennie’s work isn’t just about training—it’s about building confidence, breaking cycles, and giving kids a vision for a future they didn’t know existed. …

Reinventing the Supply Chain in the Face of COVID-19

January 4, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic created a ripple effect for U.S. manufacturers that revealed not only a lack of redundancy in the supply chain but also a lack of transparency. As the pandemic took hold, worldwide demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) dramatically increased and many material and product costs skyrocketed. It quickly became apparent that the PPE supply chain in the U.S. would need reinventing. The predictable and important immediate response to a short supply of PPE such as N95 masks was to find ways to make more. But several manufacturing innovation institutes in the Manufacturing USA network have taken an expanded view of the issues and asked questions that could fundamentally change the PPE supply chain: - How can we empower U.S. manufacturers to make PPE? - How do we match emerging PPE producers with purchasers who need it most? - How do we test and validate the efficacy of new PPE coming on the market?

Championing True Sustainability

October 18, 2024
Sustainability is a core focus across all 17 Manufacturing USA institutes, especially the seven institutes sponsored by the Department of Energy. Transitioning industry to clean energy is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 55 percent, a critical step toward achieving the U.S. goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the remaining 45 percent will require a fundamental shift in how we design, build, and consume products and materials. Here are two examples of how institutes are going beyond the transition to clean energy to more holistically address sustainability. Preserving a Critical
